What on earth is going on? Where and we heading in this world? In what condition will we get there? What really should we wish and pray for? Can we trust our leaders? Is this talk in favour of a new world order (which is not new anymore but spoken of for decades already) the thing to go for or should we be suspicious about it?
This is already too many questions in one go and none easy to tackle. Still as things, events, peoples, trends, cultures, economies, leaders, empires, kingdoms and nations, rapidly change around us, we are challenged to keep pace with a challenging world if we do not want to be outdated, left aside and as Christians, ignored altogether. But must we really engage in this rat race ? Well, yes and …no. How to know the difference ? By keeping a good balance.
Granted the Church has always been at odds with the world’s beliefs, trends, customs and events; each generation of Christians carries its own responsibility to offer the biblical alternative and be the most adequate testimony to the truth as possible; this is the Church’s calling through centuries until the end.
But how do you really keep up with the movement and still remain a pertinent and ongoing witness to the love and truth of Christ in the context of a lost and dying world, compromised with evil in every possible way ? The Lord said it:
Isaiah 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the Lord, “And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know andbelieve Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me.
The task is daunting, but required; the challenge is enormous but given, this God-given mission is defying our selfish nature and inherent weakness, yet cannot be avoided.
The mission of Christ and His Church is always to adequately represent God and his kingdom on earth, so his will be eventually done on earth as in heaven. Let’s us not loose sight of it: the Church still is the pillar and ground of the truth.
1Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
To want to be such a timely and effective witness, no Christian can afford to be SO heavenly minded that he/she is NO earthly good ! And let’s face it, this is often the blame we get, for not being mindful enough of the condition of people and societies we live in, nor pertinent enough.
Does not the majority of people around us just really want (for those seeking some kind of authenticity in life) to see a real Christian facing, in a Christ-like manner, life’s circumstances that everybody has to face and yet be a strong, pertinent, loving witness to the reality of Christ in us, who is the hope of glory ?
Colossians 1:27To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory
So once again, how do you do it ? How to properly fulfil this service individually and collectively of testifying TO the truth, not just ABOUT the truth, knowing that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life ?
John 4:6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
John 18/37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
It is a very complex question and many answers can be given to clarify the “how-to” of this mission. But one thing is sure, every Christian is involved in this great mission of representing Christ in whichever walk of life we are in.
I believe that a good part of the answer lies in giving those around us and the world at large a valid demonstration of a people whose lives have been deeply REGENERATED, REFORMED, RE-ORDERED and properly BALANCED.
Sounds boring ? Ask a tight-rope walker if looking or struggling for balance is an easy or boring experience ? Balance is not easy to find, it is not a static state but a dynamic motion. The opposite of mobility is immobility. To be balanced may appear as being immobile, but in fact it is being in a state of control of balance in motion. The opposite of being balanced is being out of balance.
There is more to real change and reformation than running after the latest fad. The taller and bigger the tree, the more wide-spread and stronger the roots must be; the bigger the building, the stronger and more balanced foundations must be. This is not a new doctrine, nor a Swiss ideal for a clean, quiet and easy life ! Paul said it before me !
1 Thessalonians 4:11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you
1Timothy 2:2 Pray for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
